•  ABOUT US

Welcome to the Ryukyu Denryu Kyokai (琉球傳流協會). We are a traditional-based society dedicated to studying the origins, evolution, and cultural heritage of Okinawa’s classical martial arts.

琉球 (Ryukyu): The historical kingdom encompassing present-day Okinawa and its surrounding islands.
傳 (Den): This translates to "transmission" or "inheritance", signifying the passing down of knowledge and technique through generations.
流 (Ryu): This translates to "school", or "style", indicating the specific lineage or tradition of our Ryukyu karate.
会 (Kai): This translates to "association", "society", or "group", representing the community of practitioners within our association.

Thus, the name Ryukyu Denryu Kyokai (琉球傳流協會) accurately conveys the meaning of "Ryukyu Tradition Association".

•  ORIGINS

Originally established in 1999 as a resource website, our mission was to provide a comprehensive reference for karate and kobudo. The website served practitioners, newcomers, and anyone interested in learning more about traditional karate masters, history, articles, styles, and more. (The resourse website is HERE)

Over time, many of the friends we made through this website - martial artists from around the world - expressed dissatisfaction with the politics, high membership fees, and other challenges they faced in their current associations. In response, we founded a martial arts group based on the traditional values of Okinawa and Japan.

We are committed to preserving the Ryukyu arts and the cultural heritage entrusted to us, passing them down to the next generation of traditional martial artists. Our aim is to promote and protect these classical karate and kobudo traditions.

We do not interfere in the internal affairs of other schools or get involved in political matters. Our purpose is to unite traditional and classical martial artists, fostering new friendships built on shared values.

•  MEMBERSHIP

The Ryukyu Denryu Kyokai provides an excellent resource for knowledge and a valuable opportunity for growth and learning. It serves as a community of like-minded martial artists—students, seniors, and leaders—around the world.

Our goal is to offer martial artists, regardless of style or system, an organization where they can retain control over their curriculum, teach in their own way, and receive international membership recognition. We provide rank certification based on time-in-grade, best practices, and effectiveness, while fostering camaraderie and friendship among members of a respected martial arts family.

The Ryukyu Denryu Kyokai remains ever mindful of its responsibility to uphold classic Budo etiquette. It is the essence of traditional Okinawan martial arts - the heritage we hold dear: honor, character, integrity, and moral values. We conduct all interactions with members with courtesy and respect.
